Each year, the Association selects an individual whose activities in the field of anatomy have contributed significantly and bestows on them the AACA Honored Member Award.  Below is the list of these recipients to date.  Those that have a photo and short description of their contributions to the field of clinically-relavant anatomy are indicated as an active link.

Robert D. Acland, MBBS, FRCS

The membership of the Association is asked to refer names of suggested individuals for suitable future Honored Member status to any member of the Executive Council prior to September of any given year.  The decision for each subsequent year is made at the Interim Executive Council meeting in October annually.

2002 - Robert D. Acland, MBBS, FRCS

.Dr. Acland received his MBBS from London University in 1969, completed internships in the UK and Tanzania, and residencies in plastic surgery in London and Glasgow.   He began his career at the University of Louisville in 1976 as Director of the Microsurgery Teaching Laboratory and continued to hold that position until 1998.  During that period he ascended through the professional ranks in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, becoming full Professor in 1986.  He also holds Associate appointments in the Departments of Physiology and Biophysics and of Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology.  Dr. Acland is a founding member of the International Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery and the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery.   As an Active Member of the AACA, he has twice served as Councilor, and organized the Association's premier Young Anatomist Event.  His CV lists 80 publications, two of which have appeared in CLINICAL ANATOMY, and his presentations have been highlights at the AACA's Annual Scientific Sessions.  Dr. Acland has been a pioneer in the field of fresh tissue dissection, establishing and serving as Director of the U. of Louisville's Fresh Tissue Dissection Laboratory.  He has been generous in sharing his experience and his technique of `light embalming' as the U. of L. facility has been emulated at other medical centers.  Dr. Acland's ``Sistine Chapel" is his Video Atlas of Human Anatomy into which he has put his heart and soul.  This fine work bears testimony to his talent and perfectionism.  In producing the Video Atlas, he has developed unique methodologies which, combined with his meticulous photography, result in masterful demonstrations of functional anatomy.  He is a wizard in documentary cinematography, and is remarkably innovative in presenting anatomy, especially in demonstrating and simplifying difficult concepts.
