In May of 1995, the Association opened a mailserver address located at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The List has grown since then to include over 550 individuals ranging from Australia to the Czech Republic and from Scandinavia down to Cape Town.
The list is open to anyone who wishes to subscribe.
Typical subscribers are generally involved in teaching anatomy in many educational contexts: medical, dental, osteopathic, podiatric, chiropractic schools as well as allied health and undergraduate programs. Subscribers to the List who manage willed body programs or work as anatomical preparators in anatomy departments may also be added to the Willed Body Donor SIG Listerve.
Since the List went on-line, a wide variety of topics have been distributed to its subscribers. These include: the Visible Human Project, embryology image database, wetting solutions, the value of dissection, body donor issues, anatomical nomenclature, dissection techniques, dissection laboratory design, computer assisted instruction, teaching resources, announcements about future anatomy meetings, and Association activities and business.
Geoff Guttmann (University of Saskatchewan) has created a searchable archive for past Listserver messages that sorts messages by subject descriptions. The archive can be accessed at: http://duke.usask.ca/~guttmang/AACA.Archive/
** NEW FEATURES & PROTECTION **
Three major additions have been made effective January 01, 2002 that will make the AACA Listserve of the safest and spam-free lists to which you subscribe.
First, Einstein has installed a centralized institutional virus scanning system on the main email server which manages the AACA list. All messages sent to the list are scanned both on receipt from its originator and on distribution to each individual addressee on the List.
Second, the AACA List now is ``attachment free". ALL attachments will be STRIPPED - clean or infected - from every incoming message before it is distributed. ATTACHMENTS are the primary infection vector and they will no longer be distributed via this List.
The third feature is that the List is now ``moderated" as Todd will be screening all messages to prevent spam and other junk from being sent out to you. The last of these new functions will, unfortunately, create a time delay between when you send your message and when it is distributed to the list. The List's In-Box on the server will now store messages until Todd has vetted them. Once they are opened and restored to the server, they will be distributed - minus attached files - to the list.
There are still a number of simple instructions that make it possible for members to more effectively utilize the Listserver. They are organized as follows:
1. Subscribing to the Listserver:
If you would like your name added to the listserver so that you receive queries and replies from the membership, please exit your web browser and send a subscription request, via your email software to the Postmaster - Dr. Todd R. Olson. If your browser mail function has been set-up, simply click on this address olson@aecom.yu.edu to send a message.
2. E-mail Subject Descriptions:
Users should carefully consider the "Subject Descriptions" you attach to your messages. This not only makes it easier to search your e-mail `In Box' for items of interest but more importantly, it greatly facilitates archiving efforts. Consider both specificity and uniqueness for the subject description of your message or reply.
Also, send more than one message if your communication covers more than one distinct topic.
3. Global vs. Individual Replies:
Many people choose to reply individually to the e-mail distributed by the Listserver. While you are obviously the only one who can determine the most appropriate way to respond to any message, you might consider more frequently sending your replies globally to everyone via the listserver address (aaca@aecom.yu.edu) rather than directly to the originator of the message. While you may not think your response is of interest to anyone else, one of the biggest benefits of this forum is the collective input of the experience, insights, knowledge and opinions of now potentially hundreds of participants. Our discussions are less interesting and fruitful if most of the communication is off the listserver.
Also, keep in mind that global replies become increasingly relevant as we archive and index postings. Only postings that are distributed by the Listserver can be archived and added to the database of discussion on any topic.
4. Know how your E-mail Reply Function works:
A. IF you want your response to go to everyone on the list THEN you must make certain that your message is addressed to the listserver: aaca@aecom.yu.edu
DO NOT USE YOUR EMAIL PROGRAMS "REPLY FUNCTION" UNLESS YOU KNOW THAT IT PROPERLY SELECTS THE ORIGINATING LISTSERVER ADDRESS FROM THE INFORMATION ENCODED WITH THE MESSAGE. Some email software programs select the address of the individual who sent the message to the listserver as the "Reply to Address." In which case, your message is sent ONLY to that person and it does not go to everyone on the list.
B. If you wish your response to be sent only to the writer of the message then you must make certain that your message is addressed only to that individual and not to the listserver address. If your "Reply" selects the Listserver address (most typical) then your message will be sent to everyone on the list.
5. E-mail Address Changes:
As your institution expands its email capacity and efficiency, it will change the server or software that sends and delivers your e-mail. This may or may not change your e-mail address. If it does, please notify the listserver postmaster (address below) of your new address immediately so the list can be updated. This will prevent you from missing messages sent out over the list and the postmaster from being flooded with undelivered mail. If a Listserver e-mail address begins to bounce mail back to the postmaster as undelivered, he will try to contact that server's Postmaster to sort out the problem. If he cannot do this within a week to 10 days, your name is removed from the list.
6. E-Mail Address Problems and Disconnections (8/14/00):
The list below are AACA listserve members who have an e-mail address that is not functioning (ie. listserve messages bounce back to the Postmaster). If your name appears on this list and you would like the problem with your e-mail address resolved, please contact Todd R. Olson. If you know one of the following individuals and they have a new e-mail address, please ask them to send it to the Postmaster, or ask to be dropped from the listserve.

If your name does not appear on this list and you haven't received a posting from the mailserver for what you consider to be a "long time" then you should send me (olson@aecom.yu.edu) a brief message to check that you are still active on the list. You can also check the regularly up-dated list of "Disconnected Members" posted on the AACA Website.
7. Temporarily Unsubscribing:
If you would like to be temporarily removed from the List, please send the postmaster a notice and he will deactivate your address in the Listserver file. You can e-mail him when you wish to go back online, and your address will be reactivated.
8. E-mail Attachments:
DO NOT SEND "Attached" documents as part of your e-mail messages to the AACA Listserver. Some more knowledgeable nethead friends and colleagues consider this practice to be BAD netiquette because in order to view an attachment (unless it is in a txt-file format), you must have access to the same program and version of this program that was originally used to generate the file by the sender. Thus, many list members may be unable to read your message completely. Furthermore, many people experience cross-platform (Mac to PC or vice versa) problems reading attachments created by the same program (e.g., Wordperfect).
RECOMMENDATION: Import the file/document that you wish to distribute into your e-mail editor and include it as part of the text of your message. This also has the distinct advantage of making your entire document accessible to the Listserver's archival system. The contents of attached documents are not usually referenced or even accessible by today's archive search engines.
