Michigan State University - Grand Rapids

The College of Human Medicine (CHM) at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks faculty to help deliver the college's curriculum in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The CHM is expanding from East Lansing and will have a class of 100 students in Grand Rapids in 2010. It is anticipated that we will need about 5 FTE of faculty positions that will join existing basic science course faculty to help fulfill the teaching mission of the College. There are two special features of these positions. First, faculty will join a basic science teaching team (with other faculty on the East Lansing campus and in Grand Rapids) to deliver the medical school curriculum. The team develops and presents lectures and laboratory sessions, creates learning and assessment instruments (including hard copy and online), grades student performance, holds office hours and help sessions, addresses student queries via e-mail and course-specific websites, and manages all aspects of course administration. Second, it is expected that the faculty will be able to support student learning across more than one of the following basic biomedical science domains: biochemistry, cell biology, histology, genetics, gross anatomy, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology; the specific combination will depend on background and willingness to be cross-trained. In such a role, faculty will become better acquainted with our overall basic science curriculum and more fully involved in, and dedicated to, student learning.

Qualifications for this position include a PhD degree in any one of the basic biomedical science disciplines, or a medical degree (MD, DO, or DVM), or a Pharm.D degree (or someone in active pursuit of any of the above degrees). Additional requirements include prior experience and strong interest in teaching, excellent communication skills, and familiarity with a variety of instructional technologies. These are fixed-term (non-tenure system) faculty appointments for which an academic rank and department will be determined based on area of expertise and experience. Positions to be filled can range from quarter-time to full- time depending on the mix and experience of applicants. Starting salary to be determined based on qualifications.
